The title is missing and the car is still taking a space. Before you request a junk car pickup in San Diego, confirm who owns it, what the receiving yard will take, how an operator can reach it, and which California DMV filings stay with you. A missing pink slip does not by itself make the car eligible for cash, a free tow, or a dismantler’s lot.
Confirm who owns the vehicle
Start with the name the California DMV still has on the vehicle. A sedan in a Clairemont driveway can sit in a parent’s name. A truck behind a Spring Valley rental can sit in a roommate’s. A van left after a sale that never got transferred can still list the last registered owner. The operator we dispatch works from the records you can show, and from what the destination will accept.
Gather every document you already have. Registration, an insurance card, a bill of sale, VIN photos, and any estate or court papers all help tell the story. They do not automatically stand in for a California certificate of title. Treat them as a packet you can read to the yard and to DMV, not as a substitute you invented at the curb.
If you are the registered owner and the title is lost, California DMV publishes Form REG 227 as the Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title. Confirm the current instructions on the DMV site before you file. Fees, mail times, and field-office wait times were not verified for this page. Skip any flyer that quotes a dollar amount or a “ready in two weeks” promise.
If you are not the registered owner, pause the pickup. Inherited cars, skipped transfers, and “it came with the house” stories show up from City Heights to Oceanside. The path depends on the papers you actually hold. We could not confirm a San Diego County shortcut that lets someone scrap a car that is still in another person’s name. Ask California DMV what evidence they need, and get qualified legal help if the chain of ownership is broken.
Keep the VIN, plate (if still attached), and your ID matching the story you tell. A cash buyer who wants a blank signature and a same-day hook is asking you to move a car the record may still tie to you. Tickets, storage, and later DMV questions follow the record, not the driveway.
Ask which records the receiving yard accepts
A junkyard’s willingness to take a junk car without title is that yard’s decision. It is not a county-wide rule. Some buyers advertise no-title deals. A licensed dismantler still has to follow California DMV procedures. Ask the specific destination before anyone is sent to tow a car with no title.
Get answers on these points, in writing if the yard will put them in a text or email:
- Whether they will receive this VIN without a California title
- What photo ID and ownership records they require on site
- Whether they want a duplicate title started or in hand first
- Who files which DMV form after the car is in their possession
California DMV material names Form REG 42 as the Notice of Acquisition / Report of Vehicle To Be Dismantled. A licensed dismantler files REG 42. The registered owner does not. REG 138 is the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, the owner-side filing. It is a release-of-liability form. It is not a junk certificate.
A Junk Receipt is issued by the California DMV instead of an ownership certificate for a junk vehicle. DMV issues it when an individual surrenders evidence of ownership and requests junk status, and that receipt then becomes the ownership document. Confirm with DMV whether that path fits your car and your evidence. A roadside buyer cannot stand in for that DMV issuance.
Kentucky and Florida junk-title rules do not apply on a Chula Vista street or a Carlsbad HOA lot. California DMV is the authority here. For the broader form list, use our paperwork guide for junking a car in California. This page is only the verification list before pickup.
If the yard will not take the car on the records you have, keep the car where it is. A tow into a lot that then refuses the VIN can turn into storage you did not plan to pay.
Share the car’s condition and pickup access
A missing title does not change how the car has to leave the property. Tell dispatch the mechanical truth: running or dead, keys or no keys, rolling or locked, fluids on the ground, wheels on or off, gas or EV, stock height or slammed.
Non-running cars, locked wheels, and cars sitting on rotors often need flatbed towing. The operator taking the job chooses the truck for that VIN and that approach. A wheel-lift that works on a rolling Camry in a Kearny Mesa lot can be the wrong tool for a Civic with no tires in a Mission Beach garage.
Access in this county is local, and it is the other half of a junk car pickup in San Diego:
- South Bay alleys in National City, Logan Heights, and San Ysidro can be tight for a rollback.
- East County gravel, ruts, and long unpaved drives in Alpine, Lakeside, and Ramona need a clear description.
- Coastal HOAs from Encinitas to Imperial Beach may need a gate code, a loading zone, or a manager’s OK.
- Hillside streets in La Jolla, Point Loma, and parts of El Cajon need extra room to block and load.
Say exactly where the car sits: public curb, assigned space, carport, backyard, or behind a locked gate. Say whether you control that property. A car you own in your own space is a different job from a car left on a neighbor’s apron.
If it has been sitting through an inland summer in Escondido or El Cajon, mention seized brakes and cooked tires. If it has been sitting in Ocean Beach or Imperial Beach salt air, mention rusted underbody and wheels that may not turn. The driver sent out plans the hook from that information.
Pull personal items before the truck arrives. Registration copies, photos, tools, child seats, and anything you still want should stay with you.
Get pickup and payment terms in writing
Ads that say “tow junk car for cash no title” skip the part that decides whether you get paid, you pay, or the car comes back. Treat a spoken number as a starting note, not the deal.
Get these terms in writing before anyone hooks the car:
- The destination’s legal name and street address
- Whether they are buying the car, only towing it, or arranging both
- Which documents they still need when the truck arrives
- Whether pickup is included, billed to you, or taken out of an offer
- When and how you would be paid, if they are paying at all
- What happens if the yard refuses the VIN on arrival
Quick Tow SD is a referral service. We connect you with local licensed, insured operators. We do not buy junk cars, we do not set scrap prices, and we do not run a dismantling yard. The operator who takes the job sets the price and is paid by you, or by a buyer if that buyer is paying that operator. Confirm which of those is true on your job.
Free towing is a common pitch. It is not a California rule. Whether a buyer covers the tow depends on that buyer and that car. Read whether a junk car can be towed for free before you treat pickup as included.
If a lender still appears on the title, say so. We could not confirm a San Diego yard policy that ignores an active lien. Ask the yard, and check the title record with DMV.
Photograph the VIN, the odometer if it still reads, and the car’s position. Keep copies of every page you sign. Hand over keys only when the destination and the terms are on paper.
Verify California DMV steps before the car leaves
The car leaving a Mira Mesa space or a Chula Vista carport does not close the DMV file by itself. Know which filings are yours and which belong to a licensed dismantler before the truck shows up.
REG 138 is the owner-side Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. File it with California DMV after the transfer, on the timeline DMV currently publishes. Confirm that window on the DMV site the day you file. Keep proof that you filed. We are not restating a day count here.
If the title is lost, REG 227 is the duplicate or paperless title application. Some yards wait until that filing is started or finished. Ask them. Do not guess from a social post.
REG 42 belongs to the licensed dismantler, within the window the DMV sets for dismantlers. It is not a driveway form you fill so a buyer can skip their own filing.
If you are requesting junk status yourself as an individual, California DMV describes a Junk Receipt when you surrender evidence of ownership and ask for junk status. Confirm current evidence, extra documents, and plate handling with DMV. Value thresholds, bonds, and plate-surrender details for that path were not independently confirmed for this article. Skip any buyer script that recites a dollar cutoff as if it were today’s rule.
Remove FasTrak or similar transponders and anything tied to your accounts. Confirm plate instructions with DMV for your exact case. Out-of-state blogs get California plate rules wrong.
If the car is not yours to junk, wait on junk car removal until ownership is clean. Cars abandoned on public streets go through local agencies. The California DMV handbook on lien sales and abandoned vehicles is the place to start those cases.
We serve every city in San Diego County. DMV rules are statewide. The driveway, the alley, and the HOA gate are local.
When to call us
Call when the car is yours to move, the destination has said which records they will accept, and you need a licensed operator to pick it up from a San Diego driveway, lot, or street-legal space. Quick Tow SD matches you with an independent operator; that operator does the work and quotes the job for your exact location. Call (858) 923-5787 to reach dispatch.
