Two wheels up, two wheels rolling on the road. That’s the entire mechanical idea behind a tow dolly, and it’s also exactly where the decision to use one either works or goes wrong, especially on San Diego’s hills.

What a dolly physically is

A tow dolly is a small two-wheeled trailer with ramps and wheel cradles that lift one axle of a car completely off the ground while the other axle rolls freely on the pavement behind it. It’s a fraction of the size and weight of a full car-carrier trailer, which is why it’s the cheaper and more common option people search for. The tradeoff is that a dolly only lifts one axle, so which axle it lifts has to match how the car’s drive-train works, or the ride does damage the whole way.

The drive-train rule

Front-wheel-drive cars go on a dolly front-wheels-up, because the front wheels are the ones connected to the transmission. With the drive wheels off the ground, the transmission stays still and nothing spins that shouldn’t. Rear-wheel-drive cars need the same logic in reverse: it’s the rear axle that has to come off the ground, and most dollies aren’t built to lift a car’s rear end safely, which is why rear-wheel-drive cars are more often moved by trailer or flatbed instead of a dolly.

All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles are where a dolly usually isn’t the right tool at all. Because power runs to all four wheels, lifting only two still leaves a driven axle turning on the ground, spinning components that expect the whole drivetrain to move together. Most manufacturers call for all four wheels off the ground on an AWD vehicle, which means a full trailer or a flatbed, not a dolly.

Transmission damage on the wrong configuration

Get the configuration wrong and the failure isn’t always immediate. A drive axle rolling on the ground while the vehicle is towed can spin the transmission’s internal components without the engine running to supply lubrication pressure, and that kind of damage builds gradually rather than announcing itself in the first mile. By the time a driver notices something’s wrong, often a burning smell, a grinding noise, or a transmission that won’t engage once the car is unloaded, real damage may already be done. There’s no simple fix for that once it happens. Replacing a transmission costs far more than any dolly rental saved.

The San Diego grade problem

Flat, straight roads are forgiving of a slightly imperfect dolly setup. San Diego’s terrain is not flat, and that changes the stakes considerably. The climb up I-8 toward Alpine is a long, sustained grade through the mountains east of El Cajon, gaining significant elevation over several miles, and a loaded dolly rig working against that kind of climb puts real strain on the tow vehicle’s engine, transmission, and brakes, on top of whatever load the dolly and car add.

The I-15 corridor has its own version of this climbing north through the inland valleys, and SR-52 cuts through hilly terrain connecting the coast to the inland communities with grades and curves that a flatter East Coast dolly setup was never really designed around. A rig that handles fine on a flat suburban street can behave very differently on a sustained mountain grade, both going up, where the tow vehicle’s engine works harder, and coming down, where the brakes take on more load than usual.

Stopping distance with a loaded dolly

Adding a car’s weight behind a dolly, even with two wheels off the ground, meaningfully increases the total weight the tow vehicle’s brakes have to stop. On a downhill stretch like the descent side of the I-8 grade near Alpine, that extra weight translates directly into a longer stopping distance and more heat building up in the brakes on a long decline. A tow vehicle’s brakes that are fine for daily driving can fade noticeably under sustained downhill braking with a loaded dolly behind it, which is a different risk profile than most drivers are used to managing. NHTSA’s road safety guidance covers general towed-load handling, and the core point applies directly here: added weight behind a vehicle changes its stopping and handling characteristics, and drivers who tow occasionally tend to underestimate that change until they’re already on the grade.

The parking and return problem at the far end

Getting the loaded dolly to its destination is only half the job. Once you arrive, the rig still needs to be parked, and a car-and-dolly combination is considerably longer than either vehicle alone, which makes street parking, tight driveways, and typical parking structures difficult or impossible. Backing a dolly is its own skill, not intuitive for someone who’s never done it, and a wrong turn in a tight lot can mean unhitching just to reposition.

Then there’s the return trip: the dolly has to go back to the rental yard, often meaning a second drive after the car has already been dropped off, retracing some or all of the same grades in the opposite direction. That’s real time and mileage that doesn’t show up in the upfront decision to rent equipment instead of calling an operator.

Checking before you commit

A few checks before renting a dolly at all catch most of the mistakes described above: confirm the car’s drive-train type from the manufacturer’s manual rather than guessing, confirm which axle the dolly is meant to lift and that it matches, and map the actual route including any freeway grade rather than assuming a straight-line distance tells the whole story. If the manufacturer’s manual says towing on a dolly voids a warranty or isn’t recommended at all, which is common for certain AWD models, that’s worth knowing before the car is halfway loaded in a driveway.

It’s also worth weighing the tow vehicle itself. A dolly loaded with a mid-size sedan adds real weight, and a compact SUV or a smaller truck that’s technically hitch-rated for the combined load may still struggle noticeably on a sustained climb like the I-8 grade. The vehicle’s rated towing capacity is a ceiling, not a comfortable working number, and driving near that ceiling up a mountain grade in summer heat is a different experience than towing the same weight on flat ground in mild weather.

Where a professional tow wins

None of this rules out a dolly for the right job: a front-wheel-drive car, a short and mostly flat route, and a driver comfortable backing a trailer. Where it stops making sense is a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle, a route that crosses real grade like I-8, the I-15 climb, or SR-52, or any uncertainty about which wheels need to be off the ground.
